The newest book in our Michigan author section is What I Saw on Mackinac, a counting book by Jennifer Powell. She takes the reader on a wonderful journey around the island while counting to ten! The book is illustrated in a creative & colorful paper collage style.
Jennifer has worked, lived and experienced the beauty of Mackinac Island and the Straits of Mackinac for most of her adult life. She has been drawing and painting since age two, and was often found curled up in the dog bed reading to family pets at age four. Jennifer lives in Mackinac County with her husband, two sons, two dogs, a cat and a turtle.
What inspired you to be an author?
While I taught I read hundreds of books to students... some were awful, in retrospect, and others were inspiring. I love art and books. Putting the two together was just natural.
What do you love most about the creative process?
Hands-on creative freedom.
What do you enjoy doing besides writing & illustrating books?
I'm a mom first and always, being outdoors sharing nature with our kids.
Who are some of your favorite authors?
Jan Brett & Chris Van Allsburg
