Meet Carly Szajnecki of Dearborn, MI. Carly has been making jewelry for about 12 years. She started Harper North Designs, which is a mixture of minimalist gemstone & metal charm layering/stacking jewelry, using basic metal stamping techniques and engraving, leather hand stitched bohemian wraps and druzy stones which paired together brings a trendy style and stones from the earth for a look you can wear day or night. What is your favorite piece of work that you have created?
Well, when this all started I wanted to have a full line of jewelry and accessories. I would love to be able to move forward with all of my ideas! In life my goals are to open my own shop, teach yoga and travel with my crazy, beautiful son Leighton. :)
What’s one thing you can’t live without?
Gotta get equal. Everyone you meet is either where you were, where you are, or where you wanna be. Lose pity and jealousy, see everyone where they are. As for my business, you can't be all things to all people.
What are you currently working on?
Do you have any other interesting hobbies or maybe a fun story about an experience involving your artwork?
Over the last few years I have gotten more and more into my yoga practice. It definitely helps with long days at shows and long days of creating jewelry. Last summer I was standing outside my tent in South Haven and who's standing there???? Oh, just Anthony Kiedis!! I wanted to give him a bunch of the men's jewelry I make but, instead I said "hi" and he said "hi" and that was it! It made for a fun weekend of blasting Red Hot Chili Peppers hoping he would return.
What superpower would you have and why?
Finding a giant amethyst in my backyard!! I never asked my Dad, but as I grew older I am guessing he hid it there for me to find because I loved to collect rocks and minerals.
Do you have any tips or inspiring words for others?
You can do anything you want to. School and society devalue artists and make people think they need to fit into boxes and feed into systems that don't work for them. Find what's in your heart, surround yourself with people who support it, and do it.
Where do you gather most of your inspiration for you art work?
I worked endless amounts of customer service jobs, I'm much happier making jewelry!! I did sell Kirby vacuums one summer...longest summer of my life!!! Lol!
