What is Yellow Door?
A 3,600 square foot space on 12 Mile in downtown Berkley, Michigan that offers the work of over 70 local artists & hip crafters.
This new store concept is brought to you by April & Steve McCrumb, the creative team that owns the award-winning whimsical gift gallery, catching fireflies.
The name is inspired by the numerous brightly painted doors that will serve as display space & area dividers throughout the store. It also evokes curiosity, happiness & possibility. And lastly, it ties in nicely with our well branded store, catching fireflies.

All the artists & hip crafters selected to participate will be juried to insure we keep a quality mix. We want a fun mix of goods so we plan on allowing items such as: cleverly designed tees, cute kids clothes & accessories, baby goods, candles, soap, creams & even locally made edibles…. as long as the items fit the flavor of the store.
We will be conscious to not over saturate the space with similar styled art wares.
Since we take care of promoting & selling your art, you can spend more time making it.

What do you get with your booth rental?
A well lit space where you can paint the walls & display your goods how you wish.
Your space will be open to the public 7 days a week Mon – Sat 10-6, Thur 10-8, Sun 12-5, and during the month of December, yellow door will be open until 8pm M-F.
An informed customer service team to take care of questions, suggestions, sales & restocking your booth with back stock if necessary.
Complimentary gift wrapping is offered on all items.
We absorb all credit card fees, bad checks & sales tax hassles.
A monthly check mailed to you for 85% of your retail sales the previous month along with a print out of what sold from your space.
A framed photo & artist statement that will be displayed in your space.
A community bulletin board & postcard holder where you can promote your art show schedule or other events.
The opportunity to host events, demos & signings throughout the year.
A motivated owner who is continuously seeking out new artists so the selection will always be fresh & exciting.
Yellow Door is promoted by Catching Fireflies & will use their email data base of over 10,000 subscribers, over 9,000 facebook fans, over 1,000 twitter followers, plus their popular blog.
Store promotion via our website that contains: image links to the artists' websites, weekly featured artists, art giveaways, local art fairs schedules & special events.
Store promotion via our interactive facebook page with over 6,000 fans: artists are welcome to post what they just dropped off, fairs they’re exhibiting in, or links to updated etsy pages.
Store promotion via email marketing: Yellow Door has a growing email data base of over 6,000 names and sends out an email every week that features artists, giveaways & more.
Store promotion via twitter: Yellow Door will post daily twitter posts with relevant links, quotes & events.
Store promotion via press releases for special events.
Store promotion via color postcards: eye catching postcards that will be passed out at local art fairs by all participating Yellow Door artists.
What do we ask of you?
A signed contract of your participation for 6 or 12 months.
A payment of your first & last month with a credit card we keep on file & charge the last week of every month for the upcoming month’s booth fee.
15% of all retail sales (including special orders).
Display pieces that fit the style & look of the store.* (we can help coach if necessary)
Your time to paint & customize your booth with our provided color palette. We provide the paint… you provide your preferred painting tools.* (if you live too far away to make this happen, we can arrange a price for us to paint & display product that you ship to us)
A well displayed booth full of products that is consistently restocked.
Promote Yellow Door on your facebook pages, twitter, websites, blogs & art shows.
Jewelers are recommended to provide a locked display of their work. (search IKEA klingsbo)
1 product per year valued at $30 or more to keep for our charity closet (This is a way we can give back to the community, plus get free advertising exposure)
1 product per year valued at $30 or more that we could use as a giveaway on our blog which will be promoted through email, facebook & twitter (This is another low cost way to create buzz & bring attention to the many artists who exhibit at Yellow Door).
A high res digital photo of you and a brief artist statement for the booth. Plus a short bio about you so we can share it when we feature you on the blog.
Not to share your space with another artist.
We will staff the space accordingly; however we are not responsible for theft or breakage.
Our store, catching fireflies has been in business for over 13 years & has been voted Best Gift Shop 7 years in a row by the prestigious HOUR Magazine.
Yellow Door has been voted Best Place to Buy a Craft 3 years in a row by HOUR Magazine.
Catching fireflies has also won a Retailers Excellence Award presented by a national gift trade magazine for website & in-store integrated marketing.
Catching fireflies has three locations in Metro Detroit – Berkley,Rochester & Ann Arbor plus a rapidly growing ecommerce website.
In addition to retail, owners April & Steve McCrumb also run a wholesale company where they design, make & sell handmade paper frames to stores across the USA.
April also is the director of the Berkley Art Bash which takes place in June and showcases 100 artists on 12 Mile and attracts 8-10,000 people.
Yellow Door is located in the same block as the Berkley catching fireflies.
Yellow Door has sold over 1 million dollars of handcrafted goods since they've opened in the fall of 2010.
Not all selling months are equal. Past catching fireflies records show % sales for each month: Jan 6% Feb 6% Mar 6% Apr 8% May 9% Jun 9% Jul 7% Aug 7% Sep 6% Oct 6% Nov 9% Dec 20% -So please keep this in mind when receiving your monthly checks.
We will need to know if you want to renew your contract at the beginning of your last month. If you want to renew with another space size or location that is open, we will do our best to accommodate.
Our goal is to have all spaces rented at all times.
Once your contract is up & you do not renew, we cannot guarantee a space for you if you want to return to Yellow Door at a later time.
Yellow Door was inspired by similar concepts in Asheville, NC.
Yellow Door was created so artists would have other opportunities to market their work other than art fairs, etsy & wholesale.
Yellow Door was also created so Metro Detroiters would have a place where they could buy a large variety of amazing handmade wares & know ALL their money spent there is staying in the state.
Since artist spaces are leased in 6 & 12 month increments, the next opportunity for artists interested in showing & selling their wares at Yellow Door may possibly be in months of February, May, August & November.
Interested artists may email us a link to their website or 4 photos of their work along with desired booth space & lease length. Please use INTERESTED ARTIST for the subject line of your email. We will keep your info on file & contact you if & when there is a suitable opening in the future.
