Alison is the creator of Whimzicals, a charming rustic line of mixed-metal jewelry and décor. I have never considered myself an artist, but I always knew I was creative. I started as one of those people who looked at something and said “Hey, I can do that!”. After trying several ideas and realizing most things were not as easy as they looked, I found I had a talent for creating jewelry. I am mostly self-taught but have also taken several courses over the years to refine my skills. I love personalizing things for people and having them participate in the design process. I am inspired by nature and animals and love making pieces that are fun and unique. My jewelry is mainly mixed metals such as copper, brass, bronze, pewter and sterling silver. I hand stamp each piece and also use acid etching and solder stamping. Each individual letter and design is hand stamped one at a time. I branched out from the jewelry into making signs, blocks and personalized family trees. My wire trees were actually created as a way to take a break from jewelry but still be productive. I am always working or thinking about what else I can create. It is so true that if you love what you do, it isn’t a job!
What inspired you to start creating your art work & how did you turn it into a business? I never saw myself as being an artist. I worked in the pharmaceutical industry for 20 plus years. I have always been creative but never felt I had talent. After a major life change, I had to re-evaluate my priorities. I had the time to work on some hobbies and I decided it was time to do something I loved. My kids inspired me to make things for them and to keep working on finding something I loved to do. I did not want to go back to working in a corporate environment and honestly, I like being in my pjs! I started going to art/craft shows and really enjoyed it and decided to try it as a business. I tried a few different things and fell into jewelry after failing at some other projects.
What do you most love about the creative process? Being able to envision something and figure out the process to get to the end result. I’m always trying new things and adding new elements to my pieces. I love making personalized things for people to commemorate a loved one or a special moment. It also allows me to forget about the troubles of life and focus on making things.
What do you enjoy doing besides making art? Riding & showing horses. Spending time on my boat, on a beach or anywhere in the sun. Napping with my dogs. Hanging out with my kids.
What makes your art work unique or distinctive? I like to combine several elements of metal work together with hand stamping to create interesting and different pieces. I like things that are off-set, non-symmetrical and off beat. I use humor in my pieces as well as empowering women. Trees seem to also be a big part of my work. My work is inspired by nature/animals and I love creating offbeat, unique things that are personalized and fun. I enjoy using mixed metals together and try to re-cycle as much material as I can. I play well with hammers!
What do you like to listen to? Country & rock music. Some pop/dance. At the moment listening to a lot of Halsey, Dorothy, Julia Michaels, Bishop Briggs & Maren Morris. I enjoy books on tape as well. Any quotes you love or live by:
-A girl should be 2 things. Who & What she wants – Coco Chanel
-Be decisive. Right or wrong, make a decision. The road to life is paved with flat squirrels who couldn’t make a decision.
-Behind every successful woman is HERSELF
Any memorable places you’ve traveled to & why you loved the area? I spent my childhood traveling. My mom was an actress & model and worked for the BBC. We lived all over Europe and Africa. I love any place where there is a beach and sunshine. Even though I’ve been around the world, one of my favorite places is Blind Lake in Gregory MI. It is gorgeous, clear blue water and secluded. Some of the best times I have had with my kids are on that lake. King George’s Island in Florida is great too! Any other fun-facts you’d like to share about yourself? I have 4 dogs, 2 mutts, a Cane Corso(mastiff) and a mini dachshund. My daughter has mini dachshunds and we are expecting our first litter in about a month! I have owned, raised and shown Arabian & Half Arabian horses locally and nationally for 30 years.
