Meet Dale Malone
Dale lives in Clarkston, MI, with her 2 teenage sons, a husband that's an Engineer (who keeps her on track with the business part of her business), a dog and a cat. She has been a Michigander all her life.
Dale has worn several hats in her life...graduating from Michigan State University in 1990 with a Telecommunications Degree, becoming a mom in 1999 for the first time, and in 1998, began her Therapeutic Massage career. The name Healthy Body Investment was the name chosen for her Therapeutic Massage business. She considered changing it but thought all the same principles applied to her new venture. Everyone should want to invest in a healthy body. Let's face it, it takes investment whether it is time (research, exercise, healthy eating) or money.
During school, Dale attended many health and anatomy classes, along with a variety of classes on body care. This is where she fell in love with formulating products for bath and body care. Her Aunt Mary, who has since passed, gave Dale her first soap making book in 2000 and she was hooked. She started with some basic bar soaps and lotions that she and her family used over the years. In 2014, Dale quit the Therapeutic Massage field and started to concentrate on just formulating. The change hinged on the fact that her body was getting a bit beat up from doing massage over the years and the need to make a face cream that I did not have to spend $60.00 on. As she began to look at what went into the face cream she was using at the time, she realized that she could change the ingredients to achieve a naturally derived alternative with the same or better benefits. There was a lot of research involved in the ingredients to get to that point but she was very happy with the results. That led to a discovery of many different ingredients and the love for the chemistry that puts them all together.
About Dale's theory of naturally derived ingredients
There is a lot of controversy about different ingredients in our products these days. Some of them are not the best for your skin or your immune system, so the research says. I believe consumers need to be more informed about the ingredients in their products. We can no longer blindly trust companies that may or may not have our best interest in mind. In my case, I decided to formulate my own cosmetic products. The cosmetic industry ingredient suppliers are starting to supply the industry with innovative naturally derived ingredients. That is great for everyone. They are starting to understand that people want a healthy alternative. Since 2015 I have come up with several formulations that my family uses every day. I strive to create innovative, naturally derived cosmetic formulas. Simple ingredients formulated together to create gentle and effective products for the whole family. What is your favorite piece of work that you have created?
Mature Benefits Face Cream – It was the first product I formulated.
What are your goals for the future, both artistically and in life?
For my business, I would like to keep expanding my reach to customers with store and online sales. I will also be developing more products for my Mature Benefits Face Care Line and the Healthy Hair Line. For me personally, my goals are to keep up my exercise routine regularly ( I have found that it is much harder as you get older to restart your exercise routine), travel more and keep my life simple and relaxed.
What are you currently working on?
A honey/maple syrup\activated charcoal moisturizing face mask for Mature Skin and a Healthy Hair Shine/Repair Serum
Do you have any other interesting hobbies or maybe a fun story about an experience involving your artwork?
I discovered last summer that if you make a paste out of Activated Charcoal Powder and put it on a spider or bug bite it will draw out the poisons and heal it very quickly. The poison is positively charged and the activated charcoal is negatively charged and porous. So the poison is drawn out by the activated charcoal and also captured by it.
What is your strongest memory of your childhood?
My parents had a cottage on Wampler’s Lake in Michigan. I spent all my summers there.
What jobs have you done other than being an artist?
I graduated from Michigan State University with a Telecommunication Degree. I worked in that industry for 9 years. I then became a Therapeutic Massage Therapist until 2014. That is when I started researching and experimenting with some of the formulas that I sell now.
Do you have any tips or inspiring words for others?
"Not All Who Wander Are Lost" or "My Religion Is Kindness" ~ Dali Lama
Where do you gather most of your inspiration for your artwork?
I started formulating products out of my need for them myself. I look for the best naturally derived ingredients I can find for my skin. So I guess my inspiration for my formulas started as my decision to use naturally derived products so that I did not have weird chemicals soaking into my skin. My inspiration was totally selfish.
