Meet Jenny Rostkowski
Jenny is the creator of JKM Soy Candles. She makes candles using natural soy and coconut waxes in a variety of styles ranging from simple and timeless to vintage apothecary to modern and contemporary. Their curated fragrance combinations are inspired, unique, and intoxicating.
What inspired you to start making candles and how did it turn into a business? I started JKM Soy Candles in 2008, shortly after my first daughter was born. At that time it was just me (Jenny), my husband (Kris), and my daughter (Madeleine) - this is where "JKM" came from. I started on a whim after an insomnia driven internet browsing session led me to the thought "Hey, I should buy 50lbs of wax and make candles to sell!" I started with the bare minimum as far as supplies and equipment, figured I'd make a little extra money selling on Etsy, and that was about 12 years ago. I never would have guessed that 12 years later I'd still be making candles, let alone have such a strong following of customers that seek me out at shows, in stores, and online. I'm very grateful for all of them, I can continue to help support my own family and be my own boss.
What are you currently working on? I'm in the process of planning out a literary themed collection. What do you love most about the creative process? Getting the flash of an idea and then expanding on it and developing it into something. What do you enjoy the least about creating? Taxes and book keeping! What is your favorite piece you've created? The celestial collection!
Do you have any other fun hobbies or things you like to do when not creating? I enjoy camping and hiking with my family. What is your strongest memory from your childhood? Playing with the neighbor kids on my block until the streetlights came on. Any memorable places you've visited of traveled to? Hocking Hills. It's a beautiful area, great for hiking.
How about some favorites? Color: Turquoise Pet: Dachshund Season: Fall Movie: Empire Records Board Game: Settlers of Catan Holiday: Christmas Cup of Coffee: Bones Red Velvet
Ice cream: Moose Tracks If you could have any super power which one would you choose? Super-speed so I could get things done faster that I don't want to do!
What's the best piece of advice you've ever been given? Don't worry what others think. Do you have any tips or words of wisdom for others? Hustle hard, get advice from others, but listen to your heart too. What are your goals for the future? Eventually, I'd like to open up my own gift shop.
