She is the the creative talent behind Joyful Creations, darling handmade handbags and accessories. Joy has been sewing for as long as she can remember. She developed her love for sewing from her mom by watching her make clothes for Joy when a young child, and can remember using her mom’s sewing machine to make Barbie Doll Clothes. Even though she wanted to go to Design School, it never happened, so she is basically self-taught. Within the last year or so, her work has taken on a new journey of incorporating cork fabric from Portugal in the making of cork bags and accessories. Some stats about cork:
• Waterproof: The natural qualities of cork repel moisture. Cork, unlike leather, will not mold or mildew in humid climates.
• Ecological: The cork oak tree has the ability to regenerate its bark every 9 years. This allows for the removal of the bark (the cork) without causing any damage to the tree itself. Making cork fabric a fully sustainable product.
• Sustainable: Its chemical and physical structure allows for amazing wear resistance.
And cork is also an amazing alternative to leather!
What are some of your goals for the future, both artistically and in life?
One goal/dream: I have been working on quitting my corporate job so I can concentrate on my handbag business full-time. On June 1st, my goal & dream will come true! :)
What is your favorite piece of work that you have created?
This Hipster Crossbody bag is one of my favorite pieces ever. I just love the look of the rainbow metallic cork.
What are you currently working on?
I am working on putting together a display of my work for an art exhibition at Paint Creek Center for the Arts in Rochester, MI, called Form, Function & Design. The Exhibition runs from April 14th - May 5th.
Do you have any other interesting hobbies?
I love making quilts, jewelry and greeting cards.
What other jobs have you had other than being an artist?
I currently work at FCA (Chrysler Group LLC) in the Powertrain Engine Group as a Test Planner for SUV programs.
What would people be surprised to learn about you?
I am a night owl. I can & love to stay up all night, which makes me not a morning person at all!!!! lol

Listen to your heart and follow your dreams.
Where do you gather most of your inspiration for your artwork?
The fashion world. I pay attention to upcoming designs and colors for the year.
