Meet Katie Doucette

Katie Doucette is from the small town of Saugatuck, MI, where she currently lives with her husband, two kids & two dogs. She is the founder of Polka Dot Mitten, inspiring handmade gifts for the heart & home.
What inspired you to start creating your artwork & how did you turn it into a business?
My mom & I opened a small gift shop in 2011 and I began making little crafts to sell there. One of our sales reps told me I should let her sell my art to other shops all over Michigan. I decided to go for it and the rest is history!

What makes your artwork unique or distinctive?
I use all hand drawn & hand-lettered elements. No fonts or clip art for me! :)
Do you have any other interesting hobbies?
I also play the piano.
What do you remember wanting to be when you grew up?
I always wanted to be a teacher.
What is your strongest memory of your childhood?
When my little brother was born he had a hole in his heart and had to have open heart surgery at U of M. I will never forget that time in my life. He is doing well today. :-)

What do you love most about the creative process?
I love using my watercolors, pens, & papers to doodle flowers, phrases, and little elements that will become new designs.
What do you do besides making art?
Playing piano, watching my kids play sports, and spending quality time with friends & family.
