"Living on the lake has always been a dream of mine. When life brought me to a point where this dream could become a reality, I seized it. I now live on lake Erie and have discovered its beautifully created treasures of sea glass and Mother of Pearl. It is my hope that I can share these one of a kind unique treasures with you. Each hand-picked and carefully crafted piece of jewelry is awaiting your enjoyment." -Marta Sievers, By the Lake Designs.
What is sea glass and what about it are you drawn to? Sea glass is made from glass debris that has been tumbled at the sandy bottom of a large body of water, like a sea or lake. After many years, the glass debris resurfaces on the beach as beautiful, smooth, frosted glass. The uniqueness of each piece comes from how long it has been in the water and where it has originated from. In some cases, a piece of green sea glass could be from a 20 year old coke bottle, a brown piece from a 30+ year old bottle from Buckeye Bottling Works in Toledo, or even from prohibition time.
What is your favorite piece you've created? A Michigan necklace. It was made with blue sea glass, the shape reminded me of the state.
What are your goals for the future? I'd like to retire in two years and focus on refining my jewelry skills.
What is your favorite memory of you childhood? Summer days at the Toledo beach.
What would people be surprised to learn about you? As a young girl I spent my summers at Hudson Farm picking cherries.
Where do you gather most of your inspiration for you work? While I'm walking the beach looking for sea glass and Mother of Pearl. Favorites!
