Meet Samantha Flucht

Samantha Flucht is the creative mind behind Sammy Whammy's!

"Sammy Whammy's specializes in gender free, sweatshop free, made to be handed down kid's clothing, accessories, and room decor for kids ages 2-8. I aim to make cute, colorful, and comfortable clothing that kids are excited to put on every day. Every item is handmade, from pattern to finished item by me, in my parent's dining room."

What inspired you to start creating your work?

When I was thirteen I started researching and realizing that most of my clothing came from workers who were exploited for their labor. Since then, I've wanted to start my own clothing brand. In college, I created a children's clothing collection based on NHL mascots for a class and decided that kid's clothing was my passion. Once I started looking at the current gender free/gender-neutral options for kids on the market I decided I wanted to take a different approach. Instead of looking for colors and motifs that have traditionally not been gendered, I combine traditionally gendered elements together. Now I'm able to put together blues and pinks with butterflies and beetles, allowing me to stay away from some of the more 'sad beige' aesthetics usually associated with gender free clothing.

What do you enjoy most about being an artist?

I love figuring out how to make something new. The entire process of creating that new thing, all the patterning, sampling, material selection, etc. genuinely makes me so excited to see the outcome.

Share one interesting thing about the items you create.

I try to work as plant-based as possible when it comes to materials. Most of my pieces include some type of felt, but I wanted to stay away from wool and acrylic, so it's actually a super soft and smooth bamboo felt!
