Meet Siouxsan Miller and Anne Simonetti

They are best friends and the creative minds behind Green Daffodil, their hand-poured candle company that is both vegan and soy based. Both born and bred right here in the Detroit area, they initially met as neighbors. From spending lots of time together and both having retail backgrounds they decided, "Why don't we make some money while we are at it?" Thus, Green Daffodil was born back in 2006 in Siouxsan's basement. Their goal is to create a healthy product that promotes happiness and a 'green' lifestyle by being as earth-friendly as possible with ingredients and packaging.

What is your favorite piece of work that you have created?

Anne: I'm loving the new Birthday Cake candle!

What are your goals for the future, both artistically and in life?

Siouxsan: I would love to travel more. And to keep trying to make a difference, by giving back where I can. As an artist, I want to continue to evolve for new adventures.

What are you currently working on?

Anne: I'm in the process of renovating our 80-year-old house. Only two more rooms covered in multiple layers of wallpaper to go! We found some incredible cowboy wallpaper in one of the rooms!

Do you have any interesting hobbies?

Siouxsan: I love to photograph in my travels - I am always taking pictures, just ask my hubby.

What is your strongest memory of your childhood?

Siouxsan: Oh, I have many...one was riding my brother's bike without training wheels before he could. He is three years older than me, so he was not happy.

Anne: Spending vacations on the beach on the east coast of Florida. It was so underdeveloped that as a 5-year old I could cross A-1-A by myself to look at the turtle nests in the sand.

What jobs have you done other than being an artist?

Siouxsan: I was a clothing designer assistant. I hand cut all the clothes and helped with designs & finish products.

Anne: I've been a retail manager for both Lord & Taylor and the Limited. I've also worked for a sales rep group and have sold advertising (yuck!).

What would people be surprised to learn about you?

Siouxsan: I was super, super shy growing up.

Anne: I have an adult son & a sweet 7-month-old granddaughter.

Do you have any tips or inspiring words for others?

Siouxsan: Always do what you love if you want success. And sometimes you have to fake it before you make it to get through a bad situation.

Anne: Be careful to not overextend yourself. We have a saying at Green Daffodil..."idea's we have, time we don't". It will help you keep your sanity.

Where do you gather most of your inspiration for your artwork?

Siouxsan: Nature is my best source for inspiration. I love being out in my garden and going on nature walks. Although I get a lot of my idea's in the shower too.

What is your favorite...

Color: you guessed it...green!

Season: Siouxsan ~ summer...I love sunshine & windows open! Anne ~ I like them all...that's why I stay in Michigan.

Pets: Siouxsan ~ Ruby, my orange Tabby. Anne ~ our two black labs, Kira (12) and Hanna (9).

Movie: Siouxsan ~ Citizen Kane

Holiday: Anne ~ Halloween. I can do as much or as little as I want as long as I can hand out candy, everyone is happy!

Best cup of coffee: Anne ~ The one my husband makes for me. ;)

Ice cream: Siouxsan ~ Campfire from Slickers in Prince Edwards County, Canada. Anne ~ Mint Chocolate Chip, yum!!

What's the best advice you've been given?

Anne: It's not a problem til it's a problem.

What's the one thing you can't live without?

Siouxsan: Dessert. I have a major sweet tooth and it has to be good!

Anne: Lip balm! I have them everywhere.

What has been the best cultural event you visited in the past year?

Siouxsan: I went to see Wanda Jackson in a small venue in Detroit. She is the mother of Rock-a-Billy, in her 80's and rocked it out!

Anne: Not sure how cultural but I went to see the Chicago River dyed green, lol!

Do you admire any artists?

Siouxsan: Chris Roberts Antieau. I'm so very lucky to own "Good Dog" from her days in Michigan.

What are some of your favorite reads?

Siouxsan: I read all the time, but no favorite. I like stories based on simple settings, slower times.

Anne: The Great Gatsby & Charlotte's Web.

What do you like to listen to?

Siouxsan: Right now I'm hooked on the soundtrack from the new A Star Is Born. I like to listen to 80's music...the Smith's, b-52's, Depeche Mode, etc.

Anne: I'm into E.D.M. as of late, also new alternative.
